Overview
The Pearl of the Indian Ocean packs an entire continent's worth of experiences into one teardrop island — ancient rock fortresses and cave temples in the Cultural Triangle, mist-wrapped tea country laced with the world's most scenic railway, UNESCO Dutch forts on the southern coast, blue-whale seas off Mirissa, and leopard-prowled jungles at Yala. Best Time
The island has two monsoons, so somewhere is always in season. December–March is prime for the west/south coasts and hill country (Colombo, Bentota, Galle, Kandy, Ella). May–September suits the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay). The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy) is comfortable year-round, driest January–March. Blue-whale watching off Mirissa runs November–April.

Free Tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization)
Required: Yes
Processing Time: 2–4 working days — apply online before departure
Validity: 30-day stay, double entry; approved ahead of arrival
Fee: FREE for Indian passport holders (since 25 May 2026)
Requirements:
- Indian passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of arrival
- Approved ETA obtained BEFORE travel via the official portal: https://eta.gov.lk (the ETA is still mandatory even though it is free)
- Confirmed return or onward air ticket
- Proof of sufficient funds for the stay (may be checked on arrival)
- Complete the online Arrival/Departure card within 3 days before travel
Visa Extension (stays beyond 30 days)
Required: No
Processing Time: Applied after arrival; usually processed within the same week
Validity: Extends the tourist stay in stages (up to 90 days, then up to 180 days)
Fee: Extension fees apply, payable in Sri Lanka

- Proof of funds and confirmed accommodation for the extended period
